Why t.me links open in a browser, show an error or do nothing, and how to fix each case on iPhone, Android, Desktop and inside other apps.
A t.me link usually fails for one of two reasons: your device is not handing the link to the Telegram app, or the link itself no longer leads anywhere because the username changed, the invite expired or the chat is restricted. The first is fixed in your phone's or computer's link settings, or by opening the link from a normal browser instead of another app's built-in one. The second needs a new or corrected link from whoever shared it.
This guide explains the kinds of t.me links, how to tell which problem you have, and the fixes for each device and situation.
A t.me link is a web address that Telegram's apps know how to open. When you tap one, your device should notice that Telegram can handle it and pass it straight to the app. If that hand-over does not happen, the link opens as an ordinary web page in a browser, which shows a preview and a button to open Telegram.
Different link shapes do different jobs. Recognising them helps you spot what has gone wrong:
Some apps and websites also use links that begin with tg and a colon. Those are handed directly to an installed Telegram app and do nothing on a device without one.
The results point to the cause:
iPhones pass links to apps through a system feature that can be switched off, per app, without you noticing. If you once chose to open a t.me link in Safari, iOS may keep doing that.
Android lets you choose which app opens which links, and it sometimes needs a nudge for Telegram.
If you have more than one Telegram app installed, such as an official app and a third-party client, Android may ask which one to use or send links to the wrong one. Choose the official app and set it as the default.
On a computer, t.me links open in the browser, and the browser hands them to Telegram Desktop through the tg link handler.
How to recognise it
You tap a t.me link inside a social media app, email app or game, and either nothing happens, a blank page appears, or a preview shows but the button to open Telegram does nothing.
Why it happens
Many apps open links in their own built-in browser instead of your real browser. These built-in browsers often refuse to hand links to other apps, so the hand-over to Telegram never takes place.
How to fix it
If you promote a channel on social media, expect some readers to hit this. A short line such as "Tap the link, then choose open in browser if Telegram doesn't open" helps. A QR code also works well on posters and slides; our guide to Telegram channel QR codes shows how to make one.
How to recognise it
The link opens a web page with a preview and a button to download Telegram or to open the chat on the web.
How to fix it
Our guide to using Telegram on Desktop and Web covers both.
If you use more than one account in the same app, a link opens in whichever account is currently active. An invite you were sent for your work account will then try to join with your personal one. Switch to the right account first, then tap the link again.
How to recognise it
The link includes a readable name, but the page or app says the username does not exist or the chat could not be found. Searching for that name in Telegram finds nothing or finds a different chat.
Why it happens
A t.me username link points to whoever owns that username now. If the owner changed the username, deleted the channel, or made it private, the old link stops working. Worse, someone else may claim the released name, so an old link can lead to a different chat entirely.
How to fix it
If you run a channel, our guide on changing a Telegram channel link explains how to switch usernames without stranding readers.
How to recognise it
The link contains a plus sign or joinchat followed by a code, and Telegram says the link is invalid or has expired.
Why it happens
Admins of private channels and groups can create invite links that expire after a time, stop working after a certain number of people have joined, or require approval. They can also revoke a link at any time, for example after it leaked.
How to fix it
Our guide to expired invite links covers each type of invite link in more detail.
How to recognise it
The link contains c and a series of numbers rather than a username, and it does not open, or opens to a message saying you do not have access.
Why it happens
Links to posts in private channels and groups work only for members. Anyone else, including people who joined after leaving, gets nothing.
How to fix it
Join the channel or group through a valid invite link first. Then the post link will open. If you were removed or left, ask an admin to invite you again.
How to recognise it
The chat opens but shows a notice that it cannot be displayed, often with a reason underneath such as sensitive content, local laws or Telegram's terms.
How to fix it
This is not a link problem. Our guide to "This Channel Can't Be Displayed" explains each restriction and which ones can be changed. If the reason mentions sensitive content, see the guide to Telegram's sensitive content filter.
How to recognise it
The link looks slightly odd: a full stop or bracket at the end, a missing letter, a space in the middle, or it was copied from a screenshot.
Why it happens
Links break when they are copied with punctuation from a sentence, wrapped across lines in an email, or retyped by hand. Some apps also add tracking text or change characters.

How to recognise it
The link opens a bot but the expected thing does not happen, such as a sign-up page, a game or a Mini App not loading.
How to fix it
Our guide to Telegram Mini Apps explains how they work, and are Telegram bots safe covers what to watch for.
How to recognise it
Links fail on one Wi-Fi network, such as at school or work, but work on mobile data. Or Telegram itself struggles to connect on that network.
What to do
How to recognise it
The link contains addlist. Tapping it shows an error, an outdated-app message, or a list of chats with nothing happening when you try to add them.
Why it happens
Folder links are a newer feature, so old app versions may not understand them. Folders also have limits on how many you can have and how many chats each holds, and Telegram Premium raises some of those limits. If you have reached a limit, adding another folder fails.
How to fix it
Our guide to folder links for growth explains how admins use these links, and how to use Telegram folders covers folders in general.
Sometimes the problem is the opposite: a normal web link inside a Telegram chat will not open.
A related complaint is a t.me link, or any link, that opens fine but shows no preview card in a chat. That is a different mechanism and does not mean the link is broken.
For a public channel, the preview normally shows its photo, title and description. If yours looks wrong, check that the channel's photo and description are set as you want them, then share the link again later.
If you run a channel, group or bot, most "your link doesn't work" messages can be prevented.
Our invite links guide explains the options for private channels and groups, including approval requests and usage limits.
People sometimes share the address of Telegram's web version instead of a t.me link, copied from their browser's address bar. Those addresses only make sense to someone already logged into the web version, and often include internal identifiers. They are not a reliable way to share a chat.
Always share the t.me link instead. In any Telegram app, you can copy a chat's link from its info page, or a post's link from the post's menu.
Scammers rely on people trusting anything that mentions Telegram. Before you tap or log in:
Our guide to spotting Telegram scams covers these patterns in depth.
These are illustrative.
A reader taps a channel link in a creator's social media bio, and a blank page opens. The social app's built-in browser is blocking the hand-over. The reader opens the menu, chooses to open in the system browser, then taps the open in Telegram button. The channel opens.
Every t.me link opens in Chrome on an Android phone. In the phone's settings for Telegram, opening supported links is turned off. Turning it on and enabling the t.me addresses fixes it.
A conference shares a group invite on its website. Weeks later, latecomers see the link has expired. The organiser had set it to expire after the event. The organiser creates a new link and updates the site.
A blog post from years ago links to a channel by username. The channel has since changed its username, and the old one now belongs to a different, unrelated channel. The reader searches the original channel's name in Telegram and finds it under its new username.
A teacher shares a folder link containing the class channel and two study groups. One student's link shows an error. Their Telegram app has not been updated in a long time and does not support folder links. After updating, the folder opens and the student adds all three chats.
Your device is not set to hand t.me links to Telegram, or you are tapping inside another app's built-in browser. Enable link opening for Telegram in your phone's settings, or open the link from a normal browser.
The username changed, the chat was deleted or made private, or the link is mistyped. Search for the chat's name in Telegram, or ask for a current link.
The link page shows a preview, and on a computer you can open the chat in Telegram's web version. Public channels also have a web preview showing recent posts.
It may have reached its usage limit or expired between their join and your attempt, or it may require approval. Ask for a new link.
If the link contains c and numbers, it points to a private chat and only works for members. Join first, then try again.
The domain itself is Telegram's. What it leads to can be anything, including scam channels or bots. Tapping a link is low risk; entering codes, passwords or payment details afterwards is where people get caught.
If you share a channel link yourself, make it easy to open: use a clean public username, add a QR code for offline use, and link it from a page you control. Our guide to building a channel landing page explains how. To be found by readers browsing by topic, list your channel on TGDirectory for free; every submission is reviewed by a person. You can submit your channel here.
When a t.me link fails, first test it in a normal browser and search the username in Telegram. If the browser shows a preview but the app does not open, fix your device's link settings or step out of another app's built-in browser. If the link shows an error, the username changed, the chat was deleted or made private, or an invite expired, and you need a current link. Private post links work only for members, restricted chats show a notice instead, and bot links may need an updated app. Always check the domain before entering anything, because fake t.me pages are a common route to stolen accounts.
