What Telegram's mutual contacts limit means, why accounts get limited, how to check your status with @SpamBot, how long it lasts and how to avoid it.
The message "You can only send messages to mutual contacts" means Telegram has temporarily limited your account, usually because people reported your messages as spam or because your activity looked like spam to Telegram's automatic systems. While the limit lasts you can still message people who have saved your number and whose number you have saved, but not strangers. You can check the details, and appeal if you think it is a mistake, by starting a chat with Telegram's official @SpamBot.
This guide explains what a mutual contact is, why limits happen, how long they tend to last, what still works in the meantime, and how to stay out of trouble afterwards. It also covers a different situation that looks similar: when the person you are writing to has restricted who can message them.
A mutual contact is someone where both of you have saved the other's phone number in your contacts. If you saved their number but they never saved yours, they are a contact of yours but not a mutual contact. Telegram links contacts to phone numbers, so a mutual contact is someone who has deliberately chosen to keep your number too.
That is why Telegram uses it as the boundary for limited accounts. People who saved your number almost certainly know you. Strangers are exactly the people spam reaches, and they are the people a limited account is stopped from writing to.
Telegram's spam FAQ describes the main mechanism plainly. When someone presses the button to report a chat as spam, the messages go to Telegram's moderators. If the moderators agree they were spam, the account that sent them is limited for a while.
There are also automated systems. Telegram does not publish exactly what they look for, and you should be wary of anyone claiming to know the precise rules. But the general patterns that tend to cause trouble are easy to understand:
Some people get limited after a single unwelcome message, because one person chose to report it. Others message dozens of people and are fine because nobody complained. The limit responds to how people react, not only to what you sent.
Gather a few facts before you try anything. They make the next steps quicker and an appeal more convincing.
Understanding the recipient's side explains why limits arrive so quickly. When someone who is not in your contacts messages you for the first time, Telegram typically shows a bar at the top of the chat with choices such as reporting the chat as spam, blocking the sender, or adding them to contacts.
That bar is right in front of the reader, before they have decided whether they know you. One tap sends your message to moderators. People who get a lot of unwanted messages tap it quickly and often, even for messages that were not really spam. You cannot control that reaction, but you can control whether you put yourself in front of it.
A few things make a report more likely:
And a few things make it less likely: a real name and photo, a first line that says where you met or which group you share, and no links until they have answered. None of this makes cold messaging safe, but it explains why one honest message can still trigger a limit.
@SpamBot is Telegram's official bot for limited accounts. It tells you whether your account is limited and, in many cases, when the limit ends. It is also where you explain your side if you believe the limit is a mistake.
Make sure you pressed Start rather than typing into an empty chat, and that you did not block the bot at some point; unblock it from its profile if so. Update Telegram and try again on a stable connection. Bots can also be slow when many people use them at once, so give it a little time before assuming something is wrong. Do not switch to an unofficial bot that answers faster.
Scammers create bots with similar names, and some message limited users directly offering to "remove the limit" for a payment, Stars or a login code. The real @SpamBot never messages you first, never asks for payment, and never asks for a code or password. Telegram has also said clearly that it does not release limits early on request, so anyone selling a faster unlock is lying.
Telegram's spam FAQ says a first-time limit usually lasts a few days or so. Repeated limits can last longer, and accounts that keep getting reported may be limited permanently or banned. Exact durations are not published and vary from case to case.
The most reliable answer for your account is the one @SpamBot gives. If it shows a date, that is the date. Asking repeatedly does not make it shorter.
A limit is designed to stop you reaching strangers, not to shut down your account. Exactly what is affected can vary, so check @SpamBot for your own case, but generally:
If somebody who is not a mutual contact writes to you first, you may be able to reply in that chat. This depends on the situation, so do not rely on it for anything important.
The same frustration can come from the other side. Telegram lets people decide who may send them messages, and some choices block you even when your account is completely fine.
Telegram has given users more control over unsolicited messages, including options to accept new messages only from contacts, and in some cases from contacts and Telegram Premium users. Telegram has also introduced ways for some people to charge Stars for messages from people who are not contacts. These are the recipient's choices, and they apply to everyone who is not a contact.
Our guide to the Telegram privacy settings checklist explains these settings from the other side, if you want to use them yourself.
If you genuinely know the person, becoming mutual contacts is the simplest way to keep talking while limited. Both sides have to do their part.
Once both of you have saved each other, try sending a short message. If the error disappears for that person, you are mutual contacts. If it remains, check that the number saved on both sides is exactly the one tied to each Telegram account.
Remember that a limit is about strangers. Asking people you barely know to save your number just to get around it is the same behaviour that caused the limit, and they may report you for it.
A limit is frustrating mostly because it interrupts something. This plan keeps the important things moving without making it worse.
A first limit is usually short. Accounts limited again and again may see longer limits, and eventually a permanent one. There is no published ladder of durations, so do not assume the next one will be as brief as the last.
A permanent limit is not the end of the account. You can usually still read, talk to mutual contacts and receive messages. But it does end any plan that relies on contacting people you have not met, and appeals in that situation have less chance, because the record shows a repeated pattern.
If your account is completely unusable rather than limited, that is a ban, which is a different process with different signs. Our guide to a banned Telegram account explains how to tell the two apart.
Occasionally someone gets a brand-new SIM, creates a Telegram account, and is limited almost immediately without having messaged anyone. Phone numbers are reused by carriers, and Telegram does not publish whether a number's history plays any part. It is also possible that a burst of activity on a new account, such as joining many groups at once, triggered an automatic check.
If this happens to you, check @SpamBot, explain honestly that the account is new and what you did with it, and use it gently for a while. Do not try to "warm it up" by joining large numbers of groups or adding contacts in bulk, which is a pattern associated with spam accounts.
Several Telegram messages are easy to confuse with a spam limit. Telling them apart saves you from appealing a limit you do not have.
This is a flood wait: you did something too many times too quickly, such as sending messages or joining chats in rapid succession. It lasts seconds to hours, applies to that action, and ends on its own. It is not a spam limit, and @SpamBot will usually report no limits.
In a group, this usually means the admins have restricted members from sending messages, turned on slow mode, or restricted you personally. It is a group setting, not an account limit. Our guide on why you can't send messages in a Telegram group covers each cause.
The person has chosen who may add them to groups. You can send them an invite link instead. Your account is not limited.
They may have blocked you, deleted their account, or simply not opened Telegram. A block affects only that one chat. Our guide to one tick and two ticks explains what the ticks can and cannot tell you.
That is a ban or a deleted account, not a limit. A limited account works normally except for reaching strangers.
The quickest way to sort these is the same each time: open @SpamBot. If it says there are no limits on your account, look at the chat or the person instead.
Mistakes happen. A competitor, an ex-friend or an annoyed group member can report messages that were perfectly reasonable. If that is your situation:
Good appeals are specific. "I messaged three members of my running club about Saturday's meet; they had joined our group but had not saved my number" is far more convincing than "I did nothing wrong, please remove the limit now".
These are illustrative scenarios showing common ways people end up limited, and what each should do.
Someone organising a meetup copies the same invitation to forty people from a public group, none of whom have their number. A few report it. The account is limited. The fix for next time is to post the invitation in the group itself, with the admins' permission, and let people come to them.
A small shop creates a new Telegram account and messages potential customers about a sale. The account is limited within a day. A better approach is a channel that customers join by choice, plus a link on the shop's website and receipts. Our guide to Telegram channels for online shops explains the setup.
An admin adds dozens of people to a new group without asking. Several leave and report it. The account is limited, and the group gets off to a bad start. A shareable invite link, posted where interested people will see it, avoids both problems. Our invite links guide explains the options.
A user in a heated group discussion sends a private message to clarify a point. The recipient reports it. The account is limited for a few days. The user appeals through @SpamBot with a short factual explanation, and either way waits for the date shown.
Many people hit this limit while trying to promote something. The lesson is consistent: on Telegram, people come to you; you do not go to them.
Buying "mass DM" services or bulk-invite tools is a common way to get accounts limited or banned. It also tends to fill channels with people who did not want to be there, which hurts the channel in the long run.
No. Telegram's spam FAQ says limits are not lifted early on request. If you believe it was a mistake, explain through @SpamBot, but expect to wait until the date it shows.
Telegram does not announce it. People you try to message who are not mutual contacts simply will not receive the message, and you will see the error.
There is no indication that Premium lifts a spam limit. Premium can help in a different case, where a recipient accepts messages from Premium users; that is the recipient's setting, not a limit on you.
A single report reviewed by moderators can be enough, especially if the message was unsolicited or promotional. The number of messages matters less than how recipients responded.
No. A flood wait is a short pause after doing something too quickly, such as sending many messages in seconds. Our guide to flood wait on Telegram explains the difference.
Your channel and its subscribers are not removed by a messaging limit. Things that involve contacting or adding new people may be blocked. Check @SpamBot for what applies to you.
Check your status with @SpamBot and note the end date. While you wait, read about how reporting works on Telegram, so you know how other people see unwanted messages. If you run a group that attracts spammers, our guide to stopping spam bots in Telegram groups helps protect your members.
"You can only send messages to mutual contacts" means your account is temporarily limited, usually after spam reports or activity that looks like spam. Mutual contacts are people where both of you saved each other's number. Use the official @SpamBot to see whether you are limited and until when, and to explain if you think it was a mistake. First limits usually last a few days, and Telegram does not lift them early. If @SpamBot says you have no limits, the person you are messaging has restricted who can contact them. To avoid limits, only message people who expect it, share invite links instead of adding people, and never trust bots or services offering to remove a limit for money or codes.
